Innovation & Creativity

Virtual Format: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the SIOP Congress shifted to a virtual format for the 2020 and 2021 editions and incorporated it in a virtual format in 2022. This allowed greater accessibility and inclusivity for participants from all over the world, while also reducing the carbon footprint of the event. A mobile app was also developed to keep the attendees informed at all times.

Interactive Features: The SIOP Congress has incorporated various interactive features, such as live polling, Q&A sessions, and virtual networking events, to enhance the learning experience and foster engagement. These features allow participants to interact with speakers, moderators, and other attendees in real-time, promoting knowledge sharing and collaboration.

Patient and Family Involvement: The SIOP Congress recognizes the critical role of patients and families in the care of children with cancer. As such, the congress has included patient and family advocates as speakers and panelists, and has organized sessions specifically focused on survivorship and supportive care. This inclusion allows for a more comprehensive approach to pediatric oncology, recognizing the importance of the patient’s voice in the conversation.

Global Reach: The SIOP Congress attracts participants from all over the world, reflecting the global nature of pediatric oncology. The congress has made an effort to showcase research and initiatives from low- and middle-income countries, recognizing the unique challenges faced by these regions and the importance of equity in cancer care.

Multidisciplinary Approach: The SIOP Congress brings together experts from a range of disciplines, including medical oncology, surgery, radiation oncology, nursing, psychology, and social work, among others. This multidisciplinary approach promotes collaboration and innovation, recognizing the complexity of caring for children with cancer and the importance of a team-based approach.

Multicultural integration: through the involvement of the attendees in onsite activities such as the discussion wall where they are encouraged to share messages in their own language, and online activities such as Twitter Take-over, the SIOP fostered a multicultural approach to the Congress.
