ESID 2024: Record Attendance Highlights Inborn Errors of Immunity Research

The 21st Biennial Meeting of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID), organised by Kenes Group, and held in Marseille. France from October 16-19, 2024, concluded with record-breaking attendance: 2,549 participants (2,401 in person and 148 online), from 93 countries. The event underscored the growing importance of Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEI) and the need for continued advancements in both research and clinical practice.

The meeting, co-organised by the European Society for Immunodeficiencies –  ESID, the International Nursing Group for Immunodeficiencies – INGID, and the International Patient Organisation for Primary ImmunodeficienciesIPOPI, served as a vital platform for the global immunodeficiency community to come together, share knowledge, and collaborate on improving patient care.

Human Inborn Errors of Immunity: An Expanding Universe

The theme of ESID 2024, “Human Inborn Errors of Immunity: An Expanding Universe,” highlighted the rapid growth of the field due to significant advancements in molecular diagnostics and next-generation sequencing. Attendees engaged in over 100 sessions, with nearly 1,900 presentations and posters, covering cutting-edge discoveries in diagnosis, clinical management, genetics, and the immunobiology of inborn errors of immunity.

Anne Puel, Chair of ESID 2024, commented on the meeting’s importance, stating, “Every day, we are seeing more patients with unexplained diseases, likely caused by inborn errors of immunity. Recent advances in molecular diagnosis and next-generation sequencing have revolutionised the field, expanding our understanding of these conditions. This meeting has been a vital platform for sharing knowledge and driving innovation in both research and clinical care.”

A Global Hub for Collaboration and Learning

The ESID 2024 Meeting provided a unique opportunity for physicians, researchers, nurses, and patient advocates to connect, fostering collaborations that are critical to advancing care for patients with primary immunodeficiencies and inborn errors of immunity. Managed by the Professional Conference Organiser Kenes Group, the event also awarded attendees up to 24 European Continuing Medical Education – CME credits, underlining the meeting’s educational value.

The Educational Day on the first day of the meeting remained a key highlight, delivering easy-to-understand, interactive sessions on the latest updates in Chronic Granulomatous Disease, Activated PI3K Delta Syndrome (APDS), genetic diagnosis challenges, and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation – HSCT for Inborn Errors of Immunity – IEI. These sessions, led by world-leading experts, offered invaluable insights into the clinical and genetic challenges faced by the community.

Celebrating Excellence in Immunodeficiency

This year, Teresa Español from Spain was honoured with the prestigious ESID Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising her exceptional contributions to the field of immunodeficiency. The meeting also celebrated emerging talent with the Junior Talent Awards, which were presented to Alberto Lannuzzo from France, Maria P. Tejada from Argentina, and Malena Pérez Lorenzo from France, showcasing the next generation of leaders in immunodeficiency research.
