The European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) celebrated its 55th Annual Meeting with resounding success, on May 17-20, 2023 in Vienna, Austria.
ESPGHAN is a society dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of paediatric digestive disorders. Through collaborative efforts and knowledge sharing, ESPGHAN strives to improve the lives of children with gastrointestinal, liver, and nutritional diseases. The annual meeting serves as a platform for the exchange of cutting-edge scientific research, clinical expertise, and innovative practices.
ESPGHAN’s mission to promote excellence in the field was met with great enthusiasm and participation from professionals worldwide, attracting 4,315 participants from 104 countries in eight different regions of the world: Western Europe, East Asia & Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Central & South America, North America, Africa & Atlantic, and Central Asia (by number of attendees in descending order), representing a truly global gathering of minds.

ESPGHAN 2023 showcased a comprehensive programme featuring 12 specialised courses in Allied Health Professionals – AHP , Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition – PGHAN, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease – IBD; also, hands-on endoscopy and motility learning zones, and over 55 scientific sessions, 340 expert speakers and over 200 abstract presenters delivered captivating presentations, providing attendees with the latest scientific and research updates in paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition.
Young professionals attending the Annual Meeting had the chance to participate in the Young ESPGHAN Day, dedicated to supporting their career advancement, personal development and network growth. Young ESPGHAN Committee Chair Andreia Nita said that many young trainees were very impressed by the initiative and requested it to be organised every year. She added that the ESPGHAN Annual Meeting is “the place to be for all young paediatricians”.
The event also received tremendous support from 18 leading companies in the field and had the pleasure of hosting 58 exhibitors who showcased their products and services. Additionally, all companies had the unique opportunity to join the first-ever ESPGHAN Product Theater, providing them with an interactive, new platform to present their latest advancements in front of an international audience.
With sustainability in mind, ESPGHAN 2023 integrated mindfulness practices into the Meeting. A morning yoga session allowed participants to start their day mindfully, and the first edition of ESPGHAN’s “Run with the Council” saw attendees running to raise funds for the “Trees for All” initiative, contributing to a greener future by planting more trees worldwide.
This year’s Annual Meeting was a true testament to ESPGHAN’s dedication to excellence, innovation and quality education, as it continues to drive progress in the field of paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition.
