Challenge

The annual meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID) is well established in its field. The delegates are well-versed in the technology used at the event, and in 2019 the challenge was how to use it in a smart way in order to engage all attendees, but also lower the impact of the event on the environment and the local community.

Solution

Choosing a green destination, like Ljubljana, Slovenia, was the first step in ensuring a lower environmental impact. There was a targeted campaign in order to raise awareness among delegates prior to the event, on the green actions that ESPID is taking. The use of the app was thus encouraged and highlighted among the activities. Webcasting and livestreaming further improved the event’s reach, while not creating any environmental footprint.

Outcomes

While the app had multiple features that ensured engagement and decreased the need for printed materials, ESPID 2019 contributed to the local community with a food donation, as well as local students could attend the meeting for free. Furthermore, by working closely together with the local convention bureau and stakeholders, it was ensured that the meeting will benefit from all environmental activities taking place in Ljubljana for the lowest green footprint.
