Empathy Meets Innovation: An Interview with Nuria Fernandez for HQ Magazine

In a world where technology is rapidly transforming healthcare, one innovation dares to bring emotional intelligence to the forefront. This year, the IAPCO Innovation Award was presented to Nuria Fernandez, Online Education Specialist at Kenes Group, for her ground-breaking course AI-Powered Simulation Training: Mastering Sensitive Discussions on Weight Management.

The course, developed on the UNLOK education platform, uses emotional recognition AI to help healthcare professionals navigate complex, often uncomfortable conversations with greater empathy and confidence. We caught up with Nuria after her win at IMEX Frankfurt 2025 to explore how this unique simulation came to life, and why the future of medical education just might start with listening.

Q: Congratulations, Nuria! How does it feel to receive the IAPCO Innovation Award 2025?

Nuria: Thank you so much! Honestly, it is an incredible feeling. I am so grateful to IAPCO for this recognition. It was one of the most meaningful professional experiences I have had. Just being nominated felt special, but winning was something else entirely. It is a great motivator, not only for me personally but for the entire team at Kenes Group. I feel empowered to continue pushing boundaries in medical education.

Q: What does this recognition mean to you on a personal and professional level?

Nuria: Personally, it is a big milestone. This is the first time I have received an award like this, and it really encourages me to keep growing in my career. For Kenes, it is also significant, it is the second time we have received an IAPCO Innovation Award. The first was for our digital learning platform, UNLOK, and now this win shows that we are still moving in the right direction. It reinforces our belief in the power of innovation and collaboration.

Q: What inspired this course specifically, and why focus on weight management and communication?

Nuria: Though I am not part of the diabetes community myself, we work closely with healthcare professionals, patients, and experts. What we consistently hear is that language matters, especially when discussing topics like weight or chronic conditions. These conversations are sensitive, and traditional training often does not prepare professionals for the emotional side of them.

This course was created in response to direct feedback from our learners. We wanted to give healthcare professionals a way to practice these conversations in a safe, reflective space, to build empathy, confidence, and communication skills.

Q: How is this course different from other medical training?

Nuria: The main difference is the integration of emotional recognition AI. While the patient in the simulation is portrayed by a real actress, the AI monitors your facial expressions, tone of voice, and the words you use during the conversation. Based on that, it gives you personalised feedback creating a unique experience tailored to each user.

You are not just passively watching a video or reading slides. You are interacting. You are reflecting. You are learning how to become more emotionally aware and that is incredibly powerful, especially in healthcare.

Q: What were the biggest challenges in developing the simulation?

Nuria: Definitely integrating AI in a way that was meaningful and accurate. AI can sometimes ‘hallucinate’, meaning it generates incorrect or misleading responses. We had to train the system carefully, feeding it the right language and emotional cues so the feedback would be realistic and helpful.

Finding the right actress to portray the patient was also key. We needed someone who could really convey the emotional nuances of such a sensitive conversation. That authenticity was crucial to making the simulation feel real and impactful.

Q: Who can benefit from this training?

Nuria: This is not just for physicians; it is for anyone involved in patient care. Nurses, nutritionists, even support staff. The skills you develop through this activity are universal – eye contact, active listening, respectful language. These are things we sometimes forget in the rush of daily routines, but they make all the difference in how we connect with others.

The experience is also highly personalised, no two users will receive the same feedback. It is all based on how you communicate, which makes it both practical and deeply personal.

Q: What kind of feedback have you received so far?

Nuria: It is overwhelmingly positive. Over 300 healthcare professionals have already registered for the course, and the response has been fantastic. Many were surprised by how engaging it was, not just because of the technology, but because it made them think differently about empathy and communication.

Our key opinion leaders were also impressed. It is rare to see such innovation applied to soft skills training in medicine. And that is exactly where we see huge potential for growth.

Q: What is next for UNLOK and Kenes Group’s digital learning?

Nuria: We are continuing to grow the platform and expand our content. While this activity focused on interpersonal skills in diabetes care, our goal is to apply this model to other areas. For example, pregnancy and diabetes, older adults with comorbidities, or even patients with Alzheimer’s or cancer.

UNLOK is not just about technical knowledge. It is about building confidence and compassion. And that is what sets us apart. As I like to say, the sky is the limit.

Q: Any final thoughts for readers who might want to explore this experience themselves?

Nuria: Yes, I encourage anyone interested to visit the UNLOK platform and try the simulation themselves. It is not just about learning a skill, it is about seeing how technology can help us become more human. And that, to me, is the most exciting part of all.

Nuria Fernandez’s work is a reminder that innovation does not always mean faster or flashier – it can also mean more human. By blending advanced AI with real emotional connection, her award-winning course shows that empathy can be learned, practiced, and refined like any other clinical skill.

As the UNLOK platform continues to evolve, one thing remains clear: meaningful progress in healthcare depends not just on what we know, but on how we make others feel. And with leaders like Nuria at the helm, the future of medical education is in thoughtful, compassionate hands.

A Brand That Reflects Kenes Group’s Journey and Future

The rebranding process was a creative journey spanning nearly a year. Kenes Group collaborated with three design agencies and reviewed over 30 unique proposals before arriving at a concept that truly represents its heritage and ambitions. The new brand identity retains the iconic red colour, symbolising passion, focus, and energy while introducing a refined logo with modern, organic shapes that reinforce the company’s dynamism and forward-thinking ethos.

“The decision to refresh our brand was not one we took lightly. It was driven by the need to reflect our position as a leader in innovation, expertise, and empowering knowledge within the event planning and association management industry,” explained Milush Bahanov, Global Marketing & Communication Manager. “Our new brand needed to capture the energy and vision of Kenes today while staying true to the values that have built our reputation over 60 years. It had to tell the story of our growth, our expertise and our pursuit of excellence.”

A Thoughtful and Meaningful Evolution

One of the key elements retained in the refreshed branding is the Kenes Swoosh (a curved shape that represents growth, movement and energy), an integral part of the company’s identity that symbolises continuous progress, learning, and innovation. Initially introduced in previous iterations of the logo, the Swoosh remains a powerful emblem of Kenes Group’s journey from a modest beginning to a global industry leader. “Today, I am proud to say that we have a brand that not only reflects who we are but also who we aspire to be,” Bahanov added.

60 Years of Excellence: How Kenes Group Masters Risk Management

For six decades, Kenes Group has stood at the forefront of professional congress organisation, navigating uncertainty with resilience and strategic foresight. As the company celebrates its 60th anniversary, it is a testament to its ability to manage risk effectively, turning crises into opportunities and emerging stronger through challenges.

At the recent Kenes 60th Anniversary and Leadership Summit 2025 held in Vienna, Austria, Executive Chairman and Chief Vision Officer Dan Rivlin highlighted risk management as the key factor to the group’s long-standing success. Following, a recollection of his speech.

The DNA of Crisis Management

“We must have crisis management from all kinds of wars, terrorist attacks, disasters, natural disasters. We used to say that if something happened around the world, we need to be alert. But our capabilities to face challenges like that—it’s really legendary. Nothing less.” – Dan Rivlin, Kenes Group EC & CVO.

From economic downturns to political unrest, Kenes Group has continuously adapted to shifting global landscapes. One of the tests of resilience that Rivlin recalled happened in 2000 when a sudden political crisis wiped out their business in just a week: “We were still using fax. When the fax finished, the paper was gone, all the business was either moved or cancelled. We brought ourselves from those ashes, and we built this core PCO empire at that time,” Rivlin added.

In response, Kenes moved several meetings within a few months’ notice, securing alternative venues, handling cancellations, and managing complex logistics. Most importantly, communication played a crucial role. “In crisis management, it is not sufficient to act—communication (two-way) is just as important, as stakeholders are anxious and seek information and reassurance.”

Facing Natural and Political Disruptions

Kenes Group has also shown remarkable agility in managing external disruptions. In 2010, the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland led to a massive ash cloud, grounding flights across Europe. The company had 8,000 attendees at an event, many of whom were stranded. “We took everybody, including the team, and we got everyone out of the city. And with a small team, some of them are still here today with us, we stayed behind just to ensure everybody was back to safety. That’s crisis management,” said Rivlin. Despite the disruption, Kenes continued the meeting until its conclusion while simultaneously arranging accommodation and transportation for those affected. “The fact that they had someone to talk to and that we continuously provided them with updates was crucial, as the situation was highly unstable.”

Similarly, Kenes had to react swiftly during one of the wars in the Middle East. A major congress scheduled to take place in Istanbul had to be relocated within two weeks. “We had to find a new location, secure hotel rooms, make announcements, and even stationed a team at the airport with a policy and a few reserved rooms in case someone missed the news and still travelled. Thankfully, nobody did.” The rapid response, along with clear and constant communication, ensured a seamless transition. “Naturally, our capability to move fast, find solutions, and calmly communicate is critical.”

COVID-19: Transforming Crisis into Innovation

Perhaps the most defining test of recent years was the COVID-19 pandemic. When in-person meetings came to a halt, many organisations struggled. Kenes Group, however, saw an opportunity. Within three weeks, the company developed its own virtual meeting platform VirtuOz, ensuring continuity for clients. “Covid came and Covid was a curse, but in part for us, it was a big blessing. In three weeks, together with a lot of people in the office, we were able to create a platform that today we can look at like the first plane. But it worked. And we had the first virtual meeting three weeks after the world shut all the doors.”

The real challenge, however, was not just the platform but managing all stakeholders—committees, boards, sponsors, and participants. “Nobody knew the magnitude of the crisis, so we initially planned to move meetings to different countries, postpone them to the second half of 2020, and negotiate with suppliers. But as the situation evolved, we had to continuously adapt. We learned how to operate TV studios and converted meetings into virtual formats while improving our platform based on real-time needs.” Kenes Group’s ability to evolve was reflected in the transformation of its virtual platform, which saw major developments from its early version in March 2020 to its refined version in 2022, and to the current educational platform UNLOK Education.

“We didn’t just sit there and wait for the government to help us, which they wouldn’t anyhow,” Rivlin noted. Instead, the company focused on communication, managing expectations, and keeping its own team motivated. “We attended countless board meetings, reassuring associations that we would guide them to safe harbour. Internally, we had to continue operations in a highly uncertain period while ensuring our staff remained confident.”

Looking Ahead: A Future Built on Resilience

Kenes Group’s 60-year journey is a powerful example of how effective risk management can drive long-term success. Whether facing political turmoil, natural disasters, or a global pandemic, the company’s response has been marked by quick decision-making, strategic adaptability, and unwavering commitment to its clients and employees.

As Kenes Group looks to the future, its legacy of crisis management continues to be a guiding force. With decades of experience and an ability to embrace change, the company remains well-equipped to navigate whatever challenges lie ahead. “In crises, there are the three F’s—flee, freeze, or fight. We chose to fight!” Rivlin concluded. “This company today is strong, it’s ambitious, and it’s capable. And you’re all going to write the next chapter.”

Prescription for Medical Meeting Success – CMW Magazine

PAUL COLSTON TAKES A CONSULTATION WITH KENES CEO ORI LAHAV

The medical market is not just important in and of itself, it is fundamental to the conferencing industry. Globally, the medical and healthcare conference sector represents a significant portion of the MICE industry. According to one recent UFI/ICCA Report, an estimated 50% of all international association meetings worldwide are related to medical and healthcare disciplines. This equates to thousands of events annually, attracting millions of participants.

CEO of Kenes Group, Ori Lahav, says the medical market is central to everything his international PCO does. “We are a mission-driven company with a clear purpose: to improve patient outcomes by fostering platforms for global collaboration, education, and innovation in healthcare,” Lahav says. “Our portfolio includes over 100 annual events, with more than 80% being in the medical and scientific sectors. In 2024 alone, Kenes Group engaged over 200,000 participants from across the globe through its events, facilitating knowledge sharing that directly impacts clinical practices and research advancements.”

The role of medical conferences goes beyond presentations and networking, they are platforms where the latest breakthroughs are introduced, interdisciplinary collaborations are forged, and healthcare professionals are empowered with knowledge that ultimately benefits patients. Kenes is one of many agency-enablers of this vital ecosystem.

I asked Lahav why the company choose to specialise in this area, particularly as there seem to be so many barriers to entry with pharma codes and other regulations to take into account. “Kenes Group’s specialisation in medical and scientific conferences is deeply rooted in our history and purpose. From our founding in 1965, we have maintained strong relationships with top-tier academic institutions and leading medical societies, positioning ourselves as a trusted partner in advancing healthcare knowledge.”

Lahav admits the sector comes with its unique challenges, including strict compliance regulations and ethical guidelines. “However,” he says, “these barriers also underscore the importance and integrity of medical meetings. We’ve developed unparalleled expertise over nearly 60 years, which enables us to navigate these restrictions effectively while delivering impactful events.”

Lahav identifies the following key regulatory challenges when organising medical congresses:

  • Content accuracy and evidence-based information

Medical meetings are built on trust. The content presented must be evidence-based, peerreviewed, and scientifically sound. This focus on accuracy ensures that healthcare professionals leave with actionable knowledge that directly improves patient outcomes.

  • Compliance with regulatory standards

Regulatory frameworks like Ethical MedTech, ACCME, and EACCME dictate how events are structured. Sponsorship and branding are carefully regulated to ensure that the content remains unbiased and educational.

  • Sponsor interaction and content independence

Sponsors’ influence on content is strictly limited to maintain objectivity. Kenes creates designated spaces for sponsor engagement, such as exhibition areas and satellite symposia as a way of ensuring that educational content remains free from commercial bias.

  • Audience-centric education

The focus of medical congresses must be to ensure that the knowledge shared has a direct impact on patient care, even if it means forgoing some of the more dynamic and flashy elements seen in other industries’ events.

  • Confidentiality and data privacy

Patient confidentiality and privacy regulations shape what data can be shared. This requires careful planning and compliance checks to ensure all shared material meets legal and ethical standards.

  • Destination and entertainment restrictions

Unlike other events, medical congresses cannot use the destination as a marketing tool or include entertainment that deviates from the educational purpose. Instead, activities like wellness programmes are designed to align with attendee wellbeing and the congress’s mission.

Lahav says the secret to success here is in turning challenges into opportunities. Kenes Group has organised some of the world’s most impactful medical conferences, including working with: WPA – World Psychiatry Association, WSO – World Stroke Organisation, WFN – World Federation of Neurology, SIOP – The International Society of Paediatric Oncology, EAS – European Atherosclerosis Society, and ESPGHAN – European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology. All are events attracting thousands of participants.

Supporting associations beyond events

For a group like Kenes, event organising is only one part of the equation. Through a dedicated Association Management team, the group provides year-round consultancy and strategic guidance to medical and pharma-based clients.

Services include:

  • Governance strategy: Helping associations optimise their structures and decision-making processes to align with their goals.
  • Membership engagement: Developing initiatives to attract, retain, and engage members through personalised communication, value-added services, and active community building.
  • Diversifying income: Supporting associations in identifying and leveraging additional revenue streams beyond membership fees and congresses, such as educational programmes, certifications, and sponsorships.

Medical associations are typically led by passionate and highly knowledgeable healthcare professionals whose expertise lies in medicine, although not necessarily in managing the complexities of running a global or regional organisation or orchestrating large-scale events.

“This is where a global professional conference organiser (PCO) like Kenes Group becomes indispensable,” Lahav explains. “Our role is to complement their medical knowledge with the operational, logistical, and marketing skills required to ensure their success on a global stage.”

Medical associations heavily rely on their annual or recurrent meetings to finance their daily operations, and another major function is to provide certified, quality education to their members. Therefore, they turn to PCOs to help them take care of the operational aspects of their conferences and meetings, including addressing any risk factors.

Legacy

In the age of the knowledge economy destinations tend to measure conference success on legacy as much as numbers of bed nights and major pharma/medical events are all about developing better treatments and health outcomes. “A PCO like Kenes Group plays a vital role in amplifying the legacy impact of medical conferences, ensuring their value extends far beyond the event itself,” says Lahav.

He continues: “Through meticulous planning and execution, we foster environments where pioneering research from diverse sources, regions of the world and socioeconomic backgrounds is shared, partnerships are formed, and actionable knowledge is disseminated. Our focus on digital tools, data collection, and post-event strategies ensures that the insights and advancements presented are accessible to a broader audience.”

Organising medical conferences involves managing a significant financial risk. Factors like fluctuating costs, unpredictable global conditions, and the need for high-quality content all are part of the work to find the delicate balance between tight budgets and ambitious conference goals.

As well as rising prices for venues, services, Lahav points towards increasing demand for innovative technologies and higher standards of sustainability, making it even more crucial to deliver value without compromising the experience or impact of the conference.

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, Lahav identifies several trends that he believes will shape the future of medical conferences and maybe, too, the broader meetings sector. “Our society is going through a major technology disruption with AI and Machine Learning. This will play a critical role in the way we manage our associations and events. I am excited about the positive impact it can have on our society.

“AI and Machine learning can already today drive personalised and data-driven experiences that will transform how we design and engage with participants. By leveraging AI and advanced analytics, we can create tailored experiences, ensuring that each attendee receives the most relevant content.” He also sees sustainability continuing to be a key priority as all sectors place increasing value on eco-friendly practices.

Kenes is also applying its knowledge gained in the medical field to foster new partnerships in emerging industries like technology and governance.

In his speech during the event, Executive Chairman & Chief Vision Officer Dan Rivlin, also the son of Kenes Group Founder Gideon Rivlin (1932 – 2020), highlighted how relationships and human talent have been and continue to be the cornerstone of Kenes Group’s success:

We believe in the ability to make a change in the world, we believe in people, and that is part of what brings us forward. It is one of those values that is embedded in our DNA. The family feeling and the bonding were carved by hours and hours of hard work. Think about it – it’s not natural. We have different cultures here from different offices, we are not sitting together, and we still build, through hard work and despite current challenges, friendships that were created while striving towards a common goal. This is what the special spirit is all about.”
